CEA Awards Grants
August 2, 2000
The Construction Employers’ Association (CEA) has awarded grants to various universities as part of its Construction Management University Grant Program.
For the 2000 program year, CEA received grant applications from five universities: University of California, Berkeley; California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo; California State University, Chico; California State University, Sacramento and Stanford University.
The CEA Construction Management University Grant Program Committee evaluated grant applications based on several factors, including impact to the building construction industry and the quality of the grant request. Each university that applied for grants received funding from CEA.
California State University, Sacramento and University of California, Berkeley were tied for first place. California State University, Sacramento received a grant award to develop a multifaceted fund-raising and recruitment effort to assist in developing alumni connections and future support and offer a site-based construction documents clinic.
University of California, Berkeley was awarded a grant to develop the construction management capabilities of small, local construction contractors doing business in Alameda and Contra Costa Counties and provide students with real-world experience. Training courses would include computing, bidding and planning, project control, legal and insurance, marketing and expansion.
California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo came in second place with a request to fund the existing CEA Faculty Professional Development Endowment. Annual proceeds from this endowment would provide professional development opportunities for the construction management university faculty.
The Program was started in 1997 to support and promote quality construction management education and to develop long-term relationships with the universities selected to participate in this program.
On October 26, 2000, the CEA Construction Management University Program will hold its second annual CEA/Construction Management Education Conference to discuss the state of construction management education as it relates to the building construction industry. The Conference will be held at the Oakland Hilton. The Conference will be attended by building industry leaders, university department heads and construction management students.
