CEA Partners With San Francisco Unified School District To Develop School-To-Career Pathway

May 16, 2000

Responding to the construction industry's biggest challenges - to counter the generally negative public perception of the construction industry and to attract vitally needed qualified young people into the industry - the San Francisco Unified School District is developing a four-year curriculum for high school students to enter the fields of construction and engineering. For the past seven months, the Construction Employers’ Association, the SFUSD, the San Francisco Building Trades Council and other stakeholders have participated on an engineering/construction pathway advisory committee to develop specific curriculum aimed at capturing the interest of high school students.

This curriculum is designed to provide a meaningful educational experience, both inside and outside the classroom, to prepare students to pursue an engineering or construction career.

The first high school to adopt this program this fall will be O’Connell High School.

On April 27, 2000, CEA contractors performing work in San Francisco met with SFUSD School-to-Career officials at the San Francisco Hilton to provide industry input for this school-to-career engineering/construction program and to develop a summer student internship program designed to provide work-based construction employment/educational opportunities to interested high school students.

CEA hopes that this career pathway, once fully developed, will serve as a pilot program for other school districts in California to assist in recruiting high school students in pursuing construction and engineering careers in the trades, project management, and design engineering.
