March 23, 2001

Leaders of the Construction Employers’ Association, the Santa Clara Building Trades Council and the Building and Construction Trades Council of San Mateo County recently held their eighth annual labor-management partnering conference in Carmel.

Charles Toeniskoetter, president of Toeniskoetter & Breeding, Inc., San Jose; Jim Losch, chairman of Hallmark Construction, Inc., Santa Clara; John Neece, CEO of the Santa Clara & San Benito Counties Building & Construction Trades Council; and Bill Nack, business manager/executive officer of the Building and Construction Trades Council of San Mateo County jointly chaired the all-day conference.

The event was attended by approximately 70 industry leaders representing general and subcontractor companies and various craft specialties.

The keynote speaker of the conference was Regis McKenna, chairman of the McKenna Group, an international consulting firm specializing in the application of technologies to business strategies. Having helped launch some of the most technological innovations of the last 25 years, including the first microprocessor (Intel Corp.), the first personal computer (Apple Computer), the first recombinant DNA genetically engineered product (Genentech, Inc.), McKenna is included in the San Jose Mercury News' Millineum 100 as one of the 100 people who made Silicon Valley what it is today.

McKenna discussed the new economy, focusing on social and market effects of technological change locally and globally.

The conference also featured Ron Speno, president of R. G. Speno, Inc., who discussed workers’ compensation concerns and accident prevention.

In addition, Toeniskoetter presented graphs displaying current and forecasted construction market trends prepared by CEA from data supplied by the Construction Industry Research Board.

Other topics of discussion included workforce recruitment and development, the energy crisis and the future uncertainty of the economy.
